Here is the summary for our keynote speakers. Summary for plenary speakers will be published soon!

Dr. Acram Taji

PhD., Professor Emeritus at Queensland University, Australia

 acram.taji@qut.edu.au

Emeritus Professor Acram Taji (PhD) came to Adelaide from Iran in 1971 to study English and advance her knowledge of plant sciences. She brought with her a Bachelor of Agricultural Science and two dictionaries—one in English to Persian and the other in Persian to English. Professor Taji has traveled to 88 countries, supervised 55 Research students, and shared her skills and knowledge with others because of her competence in plant physiology and horticulture science. Her work is currently at the front edge of native Australian plant biotechnology. She was the first woman to be elevated to the position of Professor in the University of New England’s Faculty of Rural Science and Agriculture in 1999. A woman from a diverse cultural and linguistic background who works in a typically male field succeeding at the highest level of academia speaks eloquently about Professor Taji’s dedication and tenacity.

Key Achievements

  • First female in the history of University of New England to be promoted to full professor within the Faculty of Agriculture and Rural Science, 2000
  • As the Chair of Vice Chancellor Women’s Advisory Committee at UNE in 1995 I put forward the idea of achievement based promotion as per active years of service.  This allowed for many high quality women who had taken time off to have children to be competitive against male colleagues.  This policy later was introduced to all other universities in Australia
  • Use of technology in teaching- e.g. teaching via satellite at the University of South Pacific in Fiji
  • Development of an international Master of Plant Tissue Culture and Biotechnology in the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka
  • Development of a trans-disciplinary degree between the Faculty of Law and Faculty of Science- Bachelor of AgLaw at UNE.
  • Development of first ever Professional Doctorate in Sciences in Australia- at the University of New England in 2001
